Inflammatory Bowel Disease

At Columbia Asia we have a disease management team of expert gastroenterologists and surgeons specifically trained in the diagnosis and management of Crohns and Colitis. We also have setup a team of IBD focused pathologists, radiologists, nutritionists and mental health specialists. We recognize that Crohns and colitis patients need specialized care and care from multiple teams. With this in mind we have care co-ordinators who will help patients navigate through the system. On of our most recent inititatives is to build a patient centred support group to help with counselling and decision making. 

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is comprised of two major disorders:

Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes sores in the intestine.

Symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhoea (with blood).The onset of symptoms is usually gradual and symptoms are progressive over several weeks

Diagnosis

Our specialists will perform a thorough clinical examination, In addition following diagnostic tests are recommended (one or more) – Haemogram with ESR, Radiographic imaging, endoscopy and stool examination.

Treatment

The disease can be managed using medications, surgery and through dietary modifications. Our specialists will evaluate you and recommend the most suitable option. Our doctors have proven credentials in performing such procedures.

Crohn’s disease

 Crohn’s Disease can involve any component of the gastrointestinal tract from the oral cavity to the anus and is characterized by transmural inflammation. Prolonged diarrhoea with abdominal pain, with or without gross bleeding, fatigue, and weight loss are the common symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

Diagnosis

Our specialists will perform a thorough clinical examination, In addition following diagnostic tests (one or more) will be performed - endoscopy, CT and MR imaging, blood tests

Treatment

The disease can be managed using medications and by modifying diet. However, most patients need to undergo surgery at some stage to remove the diseases part of the intestine. It helps to conserve the healthy portions of the GI tract and people can have a good quality of life.

Surgical Procedures

Sphincter saving rectal resections: Preserving the anorectal sphincter function and thereby maintaining a comfort for patient is an important goal in these surgeries, while treating patients with carcinomas of rectum. Loop ileostomy is frequently used to provide temporary fecal diversion following sphincter-saving rectal resections and ileoanal pouch procedures for patients with ulcerative colitis.

 Irritable bowel syndrome:

Irritable bowel syndrome manifests as recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least 2-3 days per month in the last three months with two or more of the following: improvement with defecation, a change in frequency of stool, or onset associated with a change in form of stool.

Causes of IBS

The causes vary and could be one or more of the following:  irregular diet and sleep habits, lactose intolerance, food allergies, etc.

Treatment of IBS

Treatment is normally medical management with dietary changes. Our doctors will decide the options which are best suited after clinical evaluation.
