Immuno-suppressants

These are medication which will be prescribed to all kidney transplant patients to reduce the risk of rejection of the donor kidney. Usually a combination of two or three different immune-suppressants is advised. The doctors try to balance the dose with minimal side effects. Side effects of immune-suppressants include: 

  • A high risk of infections
  • Increased risk of diabetes and hypertension
  • Weight gain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive hair growth or loss
  • Swollen gums
  • Easy bruising
  • Thinning of bones (osteoporosis) and bone damage (osteosclerosis)
  • Acne
  • Mood swings
  • An increased risk of some types of cancer
  • High cholesterol
  • Puffiness of the face
