Preterm Labour Symptoms & Premature Delivery of Baby

Premature delivery of baby happens when the mother starts going into labour well before the expected date of delivery. It is possible to delay the delivery as the longer the baby remains inside the womb and reaches the expected date of delivery, the lesser the problems for the premature baby.

Causes:

  • Smoking and excess consumption of alcohol
  • Overweigh or underweight mother
  • The mother having risks like pre-eclampsia, diabetes, infections
  • Multiple pregnancy

Warning signs

  • Backache: continuous low back ache
  • Contractions increasing in frequency and lasting for longer duration
  • Fluid leak from the vagina
  • Vaginal mucoid blood tinged discharge

Treatment will include

  • Admission
  • Complete rest
  • IV fluids
  • Antibiotics and sometimes corticosteroids
  • Fetal heart monitoring
  • Maternal heart rate, body temperature and uterine contractions are monitored

If progress in labor cannot be stopped, the doctor will take a decision on the type of delivery depending on the condition of the mother and baby

The premature infant will be handed over to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

A premature baby will be at a high risk of having underdeveloped organs or future health issues. They have a higher rate of congenital abnormalities.  Lungs of a premature baby are immature and lack a liquid called surfactant which allows lungs to remain expanded and can cause RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome).  These babies will need artificial surfactant and ventilator to help breathe.

Very premature babies may have broncho pulmonary dysplasia and may need long term oxygen.

Retinopathy of prematurity occurs as retina is not fully developed in premature infants. Most cases resolve by themselves. In some cases laser surgery is required.

It is important to note that the delivery of multiple babies is usually premature in nature. Twins are usually born within the 37 week range; triplets by the 33rd week; and quadruplets by 31 weeks of pregnancy.

How to Avoid Preterm Labour & Premature Delivery?

Having a healthy pregnancy diet and resting well through your trimesters will lower the changes of a premature delivery of baby. You have to try and take it easy and avoid stress as well. Dental hygiene, specifically gum disease, has a high correlation with premature deliveries.
